Chashma Hydel Power

Chashma Hydel Power Station is located on the right abutment of Chashma Barrage. The barrage is located on the Indus River near the village of Chashma in Mianwali District, which is about 30 Km south of Mianwali, 11 Km south west of Kundian Railway Junction and about 304 Km North West of Lahore. It is low head Hydel Power station with total capacity of 184 MW consisting of 8 units each of 23 MW. it is run-of-river plant & bulb type turbines are installed with rated head of 8.4 meters. Operation/ loading is dictated by releases downstream in Chashma reservoir, being controlled by the Indus river system authority (Irsa).

The Barrage

Chashma Barrage was constructed under the umbrella of Indus Basin Replacement Works. It is located on river Indus about 56 Km downstream of Jinnah Barrage. It’s purpose is to supply water to CJ-Link Canal on the left and Chashma Right Bank Canal on its right side. Unlike other barrages, a small storage reservoir has been provided at the Barrage to re-regulate the supplies of Tarbela reservoir. Two head regulators, one for CJ-Link Canal and the other for CRBC exist on the left and right banks respectively.
A fish ladder and navigation lock have also been provided. A low head hydel power station has been constructed in 2001 on the right side of Chashma Barrage.

Financing of Indus Basin Project was done by the World Bank and other donors included Govt. of Australia, Canada, Germany, Newzeland, United Kingdom & USA respectively.

The Contractor for Chashma Barrage works was awarded to French Consortium Societe Dumez and Societe Borie.
