REHABILITATION OF RENALA HYDROPOWER PROJECT

WAPDA has planned to rehabilitate the existing 84 years old Renala Hydel Power Station on LBDC (RD 160 +686) to enhance its capacity from 1.1 MW to 4.0 MW by utilizing full available discharge of 170 m3/Sec in LBDC at Renala, against the existing use of 71m3/sec. Annual Energy Generation from Renala Hydel Power Station after proposed Rehabilitation is approximately 25.6 GWh. Estimated cost for the proposed Rehabilitation Scheme is about Rs. 1000 million.

Feasibility Report of the proposed Rehabilitation was prepared by G.M (Hydro) Planning WAPDA in 2007. Before proceeding for implementation of the Project involving changes in the existing Power Channel off taking from LBDC, formal consent of Punjab Irrigation & Power Deptt was requested on 06.08.2007.

Following consensus was developed in various meetings between WAPDA and Punjab I&P Department.

  1. Punjab Irrigation & Power Department has no reservation on WAPDA's proposal of passing the entire discharge of LBDC through Renala Power Channel, after its remodeling, to achieve power generation of 4.0 MW by carrying out Rehabilitation of the existing Renala Hydel Power Station.
  2. Feasibility study of Renala Rehabilitation Scheme by WAPDA based on utilization of 170m3/sec water in LBDC (historical data) is considered to be reasonable.
  3. WAPDA will construct new Spillway in place of the existing one as a part of Renala Rehabilitation Project having capacity to pass through the Design discharge of Canal at Renala i.e. 234 m3/Sec, expected to be attained after completion of LBDC improvement Project.
  4. The Road Bridge on LBDC adjacent to the Spillway will be upgraded by the Irrigation Deptt, while the Bridge on Power House Tailrace will be constructed by WAPDA alongwith up-gradation of the channel.

On the basis of above technical consensus WAPDA requested Secretary I&P Deptt, Punjab vide letter dated 09.06.2009 to issue a letter of Consent/No objection for WAPDA's proposed Rehabilitation Hydel Power Station.

Estimated Cost:

Estimated Cost of Project is Rs. 1434.939 Million (LCC: Rs. 1052.336 Million, FCC: Rs. 382.60 Million)

Present Status

Updated Feasibility study was finalized by G.M Hydro planning office in light of comments of G.M Hydel (Development) in October 2011. Case for concept clearance will be shortly forwarded to competent forum i.e. CDWP/CCC, Planning & Development Division GoP Islamabad after concurrence of WAPDA Authority. Arrangement of Finance and preparation of PC-I will be taken up simultaneously after the aforementioned concept clearance.
