Kurram Garhi Hydel Power

Kurram Garhi Power House is situated in North-West of Bannu district of Khyber Pukhtun-khwa at a distance of about 09 km from Bannu City. The 04 MW Kurram Garhi Hydel Power Station (Power House No.1&2) was constructed in cascade and commissioned in 1957 by NWFP Irrigation Department. Later on, these Power Houses were handed over to WAPDA on 05-10-1961.

Kurram garhi Hydel Power Station (4 MW) has been in operation since 1957, providing cheap Hydro Electric Power. Over the years, most of the major components of the plant have become obsolete technology, outlived their useful lives and deteriorated due to excessive wear & tear causing reduction in turbine efficiency and capacity of the plant to 3.5 MW.

Prime Minister of Pakistan, during a public meeting at Bannu on 3rd May, 2016 announced up-gradation of Kurram Garhi Hydel Power Station.

Rehabilitation and up-gradation of Kurram Garhi Hydel Power Station will enhance the capacity from 3.5 MW to 5 MW and provide more reliable & consistent power to the National Grid for another 30~40 years. Moreover, the project will also boost the voltage profile of the local region and help in eradicating energy shortage problems in the area. The estimated cost of the Project is PKR 1180.851 M and completion time is 3 years.

The EoI for shortlisting of Engineering Firms for the Consultancy Services for Detailed Engineering Design, Preparation of Tender Documents and Construction Supervision for Implementation is under evaluation.

Chitral Hydel Power

The existing 1.0 MW Chitral Hydel Power Station is located on the right bank of Lutkho River, 5 km upstream of Chitral City. The Project was commissioned in 1975 by diverting the flows of Lutkho River through 3.72 km long channel and installing 2 units of 200 kW and 2 units of 300 kW each. The power generated from Chitral Hydel Power Station is supplied to Chitral City through 11 kV Transmission Line.

The power demand in Chitral area has now been increased and there is a dire need to upgrade the capacity of existing Hydel Power Station at Chitral. In the initial construction phase of Project, limited flows of Lutkho River were diverted to Power Channel for generation of 1 MW only. However the river has abundant flows which can be utilized for Power Generation by constructing a small diversion weir, remodeling of power channel & fore bay and installation of new penstocks and additional units. It is estimated that the Power can be enhanced up to 5 MW.

Topographic Survey, Geological Mapping for weir Intake, Power Channel and Power House areas and drilling at weir and Power House area were carried out. Tender Design Report has already been completed.

The estimated cost of the Project is USD 21.888 million and completion time is 3 years.

HISTORY

To meet the requirements of irrigation in Malakand valley and district Mardan and Swabi, an irrigation scheme was planned by the British Government in 1903. The plan consists of headwork at Amandara near Batkhela on River upper Swat, unlined irrigation channel 7.2 Km long up to Malakand Pass and excavation of 17.5 Ft dia, 3.4 Km long tunnel underneath of Malakand Pass. A network of irrigation canals including Abazi and Machai branches and their distributaries were also part of the project. The project started in 1907 and completed in 1914.

In 1930, a hydropower project was planned by British Government, at Jabban, 10 Km of Dargai town Malakand Agency. For this purpose a free power tunnel called Barkat tunnel was excavated on the right side of the outlet regulator of Benton tunnel. The length of tunnel is 0.97 Km and its diameter is about 14 feet. The discharge capacity of Barkit tunnel is 1200 cusecs. Jabban hydro power projects was started in 1934 and completed in 1937.

After successful commissioning and operation of Jabban Power Station, an idea was proposed that if the water from the Tail Race of Jabban Power Station is led to Dargai, sufficient head could be produced large enough to produce electric power of 20 MW. To give practical shape to this idea, in 1948 another power projects was planned at Dargai Malakand Agency which completed in 1952.
