August 19, 2016: The Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Zafar Mahmood today presided over a meeting to review construction work on the 969 MW-Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project (NJHP). The meeting was attended by WAPDA Member (Water) Muhammad Shoaib Iqbal, NJHP Chief Executive Officer Engineer Muhammad Zubair, WAPDA General Manager (Central Contract Cell) Nasir Hanif, NJHP Project Director Nayyar Alauddin and NJC (Consultants) Project Manager William B. Dobbs and CGGC (Contractor) Project Manager Hu Quanguang.
Lahore - August 18, 2016: The Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) today launched its ‘One Million-Tree Plantation Campaign’, which aims at planting one million trees at various WAPDA projects in the four provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K), Gilgit Baltistan and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) during the two plantation seasons of the fiscal year 2016-17.
7.4 MAF WATER STORED IN RESERVOIR FOR IRRIGATION, POWER GENERATION
Lahore: August 16, 2016: The Mangla Dam today filled to its maximum storage level of 1242 feet above mean sea level.It is worth mentioning that Mangla Dam, the first-ever mega multi-purpose project in Pakistan, was completed in 1967 with storage capacity of 5.88 MAF which reduced to 4.6 MAF due to sedimentation till 2004. Subsequently, Mangla Dam Raising Project was initiated in 2004 with a view to maximizing hydro potential of River Jhelum. The project was substantially completed in December 2009. The dam was raised by 30 feet in December 2009 to increase water storage level of the reservoir upto 1242 feet above mean sea level. Thus, water storage capacity of the Mangla reservoir increased to 7.4 MAF from 4.6 MAF. As a result of the raised Mangla Dam, the additional 2.88 MAF of water can irrigate another 1.314 million acres of land, and generate 644 million additional units of electricity per annum from the existing Mangla Hydel Power Station.
Lahore – August 14, 2016: A graceful ceremony was held here today at WAPDA House to celebrate the Independence Day with national zeal. WAPDA Chairman Zafar Mahmood, chief guest of the ceremony, hoisted the national flag followed by the National Anthem that was sung by the students of WAPDA schools in consonance with the main flag hoisting ceremony at Convention Centre, Islamabad.
July 19, 2016: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today between the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) and National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) for mutual cooperation to conduct joint training and research activities for addressing water security and quality challenges through improved governance and efficient management of water resources.
Lahore – July 12, 2016: The Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Zafar Mahmood visited the under construction 1410 MW-Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project to review progress of work on the project. He had a detailed visit of the project area and witnessed construction activities on various sites including powerhouse and switchyard.
