Lahore – March 9, 2016: The Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) today organised a ceremony here at WAPDA Auditorium to honour its players who representing Pakistan, won gold, silver and bronze medals in the 12th South Asian Games 2016 held in India. Cash awards were presented to all WAPDA medalists on the occasion. In addition, announcement of one step promotion for the gold medalists were also made in accordance with the policy of WAPDA Sports Board.
WAPDA Chairman Zafar Mahmood, who is also WAPDA Sports Board Patron-in-Chief, was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
Addressing on the occasion, WAPDA Chairman congratulated the WAPDA medalists of the 12th South Asian Games for their brilliant performance for the country and the nation. It is a matter of great pride for WAPDA that its players bagged 47 medals for the country, out of Pakistan’s total 106 medals. The medals won by WAPDA players include 7 gold, 19 silver and 21 bronze, he added.
The Chairman said that WAPDA has been playing a pivotal role for promotion of sports and betterment of sports persons in Pakistan for more than five decades. WAPDA players have not only been exhibiting their class at the national level but also bringing laurels to Pakistan in international competitions, he further said. The Chairman emphasized that the achievements of other sports should also be highlighted in media like that of cricket so that the players, who win in various international events, also feel encouraged.
It is pertinent to mention that out of its 57 teams in various sports disciplines, WAPDA is national champion in 28 sports and runners up in 17 disciplines. Besides, WAPDA players, representing Pakistan in international events have also won 52 gold, 75 silver and 68 bronze medals for the country since 2006.
WAPDA Members Water, Power and Finance, WAPDA Secretary/WAPDA Sports Board President, WAPDA Managing Director (Administration), National Transmission and Dispatch Company Managing Director, Chief Executive Officers of Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) and Fasialabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) and WAPDA Director Generals Services, Sports, and Human Resource & Administration also attended the ceremony.
