Lahore – December 31, 2015: Central Model School, Lahore won WAPDA T-12 Schools Cricket Tournament, defeating WAPDA School by 7 wickets in final of the tournament, played here today at WAPDA Sports Complex under the aegis of WAPDA Sports Board.
Bating first, WAPDA School set a target of 80 runs for Central Model School, as they were all out in 10 overs. Central Model School achieved the target in 6th over for 3 wickets. Behroz Aqeel of Central Model School was declared man of the match for his 4 wickets for 13 runs.
Government Islamia High School, Lahore Cantt secured third position in the tournament. Shahid Ahmed of WAPDA School declared best batsman of the tournament, while Hasnat Abbas of Crescent School best bowler and Usama Zahid of Central Model School best fielder of the tournament.
It is pertinent to mention that WAPDA organised first ever T-12 Schools Cricket Tournament as part of its corporate social responsibility with a view to improve the standard of fielding in Pakistani cricket. As many as 8 teams participated in the 10-day cricket tournament which was played under modified rules focused on fielding skills of the players.
Inter-provincial Coordination Federal Minister Riaz Hussain Pirzada was the chief guest of the concluding ceremony, who gave away winning trophy and a cash prize of Rs.50,000 to the Central Model School team, runners up trophy and a cash prize of Rs.30,000 to WAPDA School team and a cash prize of Rs.20,000 to Government Islamia High School, Lahore Cantt team. He also distributed shields among best players, the schools which participated in the tournament, umpires, scorers and members of the technical committee. The Federal Minister also announced cash prize of Rs.50,000 each for Central Model School and WAPDA School teams from the Ministry of Sports as winner and runners up of the tournament.
Addressing the ceremony, the Federal Minister congratulated WAPDA on organising the tournament. He expressed hope that such innovative efforts by WAPDA will help improve the standard of fielding in Pakistani cricket.
Earlier, WAPDA Chairman Zafar Mahmood, in his welcome address, apprised the Minister about WAPDA’s role in promotion of sports in Pakistan and its achievements at national and international level. Dilating upon the new initiatives by WAPDA in sports, he requested the Federal Minister to direct the Sports Ministry and Pakistan Sports Board to help WAPDA in organising sports competitions between the students of the mainstream schools and that of religious madaris to promote harmony among them. The Federal Minister appreciated the idea and said that the Sports Ministry and Pakistan Sports Board will provide fullest support to WAPDA for this national cause.
WAPDA Member (Power) Badr-ul-Munir Murtiza, Secretary WAPDA and WAPDA Sports Board President Amer Ahmad, WAPDA General Managers and WAPDA Sports Board senior officers were also present on the occasion.
