PAF Air War College delegation briefed at WAPDA House about water, hydropower sectors

Lahore – December 29, 2017: A delegation of PAF Air War College, Karachi headed by Group Captain Ejaz Yousaf Cheema, today visited WAPDA House. During the visit, the delegation was briefed about water and hydropower sectors of the country. WAPDA Member (Finance) Muhammad Ikram Khan and senior officers of WAPDA were also present on the occasion.

Additional Chief Engineer (Dams) briefed the delegation about the water and hydropower sector. He said that WAPDA is working on a number of projects for harnessing the water resources to meet the increasing requirement of water and electricity in the country. The delegation was apprised that WAPDA is constructing several projects in water and hydropower sectors. Out of them, three projects of 2487 MW namely 969-MW Neelum Jhelum, 1410-MW Tarbela 4th Extension and108-MW Golen Gol will be completed in a phased manner from early 2018 to mid 2018. Currently WAPDA has hydel power generation capacity of 6919 MW, which will increase to 9406 MW after completion of these three projects. The delegation was further briefed that WAPDA has recently completed Kachhi Canal in August this year which will irrigate 72,000 acres of barren land in Dera Bugti, Balochistan.

The delegation was also informed of water sector projects which are under construction including Nai Gaj Dam and Kurram Tangi Dam. The delegation was told that some other projects in water and hydropower sectors are ready for construction. WAPDA hopes to start construction on main works of Diamer Basha Dam with gross water storage capacity of 8.1 MAF and power generation capacity of 4500 MW and Mohmand Dam with gross water storage capacity of 1.2 MAF and power generation capacity of 800 MW in 2018.

The delegation was also briefed about annual water flows and storage capacity, per capita availability of water, impact of climate change on water resources, water management challenges, water conservation and hydropower potential of the country.

Subsequent to the briefing, the queries about water and hydropower sectors raised by the participants were responded to in a question-answer session. Later, WAPDA Member (Finance) and PAF Air War College delegation head exchanged the souvenirs as memento to the visit.
