NAULONG DAM PROJECT

1. Location
 

The proposed Naulong Storage Dam Project is located on Mula river at Sunt about 30 Kms from Gandawa City in Tehsil and District Jhal Magsi of Balochistan.

2. Scope of Work

Government of Pakistan intends to develop land and water resources of the country for irrigated agriculture development, hydropower, flood control, socio economic uplift, and emancipation of poor and needy women of the area.

3. Objectives / Benefits -Irrigation of 47,000 acres of Culturable Command Area.
-Hydropower Generation of 4.4 MW.
-Flood Mitigation.
-Socio-economic uplift.
-Women Emancipation.

5. Date of Completion September 2015 (Construction Period = 3 Years)

7.Salient Features

186 ft high Zoned Earth fill dam will create gross storage of 0.242 MAF and this storage will be used to irrigate 47,000 acres of Culturable Command Area with high efficiency irrigation system alongwith hydropower generation of 4.4 KW (As per decision of CDWP the power component will be implemented under public private partnership basis).

8. Present Status / Progress

1. Feasibility study and detailed engineering design of the Project completed in 2009.
2. Tenders for construction opened on April 17, 2010. Project is under award to the lowest 
     bidder M/s. Descon - Zargoon JV (Bid Price = Rs. 13.708 Billion). Letter of intent issued       on April 12, 2011.Letter of acceptance for Main Dam & Structures issued to the         Contractor on May 10, 2012.
3. During visit to China the Honorable President of Pakistan invited invited Chinese firms to     participate for construction of Naulong Dam Project. Governor of Balochistan assured full     security arrangements for the construction of the Project including Chinese firms.
4. M/s Descon & Sinohydro of China Have signed a Joint venture agreement as contractor
    for construction of the project and submitted a revised proposal.
5. Chinese firm M/s. Sinohydro requested for security arrangements by Government of      Balochistan.
6. Draft MOU for security between WAPDA and Sinohydro as required by Exim Bank of China     was submitted to Govt. of Balochistan on January 30, 2012, which was concerned on     May 30, 2012.
7. Exim Bank pre-requisites for concessional/ preferential funding is that the commercial     contract be signed with Chines firm with lead role.
8. M/s Descon & Sinohydro agreed in principle for lead role of Sinohydro and finalizing the     terms and conditions.
9.  Revised PC-I amounting to Rs. 18.028 Billion cleared by ECNEC on August 16, 2012.
10.Ground breaking is scheduled in 2nd week of September.
